Asset managers are looking for talented individuals who can demonstrate a high level of numeracy, intellectual curiosity, and strong soft skills. Asset Management firms look for a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a financial discipline and a professional qualification. Some of the skills required are an understanding of financial markets, statistics, econometrics, financial modeling, and good communication and presentation abilities

What to Expect from an Asset Management Graduate Scheme
Most asset management graduate schemes are structured as 12–24-month programs designed to develop technical investment knowledge alongside commercial awareness. They typically begin with an induction period covering financial markets, valuation techniques, compliance, and internal systems, followed by either rotational placements across teams or a fixed placement within one investment desk with structured exposure to adjacent functions. Graduates are usually assigned a mentor and line manager who will give regular performance reviews. In some cases graduates are supported to study towards professional qualifications like the CFA.

Asset Management Recruitment
Asset Management recruitment is competitive. Applicants apply to programs directly on the employer’s website.
Applications usually open between August and October for roles starting the following July to October. Offers are typically made to successful applicants before the end of the year.
Applicants are filtered through several stages. First, an online or telephone interview to discuss the candidate’s current situation, experience, and expectations for the role. The second stage is an online or in-person meeting, typically with the hiring manager and a member of the team to walk through your resume, answer technical questions, and questions about the role and team. The third step of the interview process is an in-person interview and presenting a case study. This stage differs between companies, but generally aims to do a deep dive into the candidate’s technical capabilities. The fourth and final step is a meeting with senior leaders and HR representatives. This is generally to assess the candidate’s cultural fit and an opportunity to meet other members of the team.
